Laser resurfacing is a treatment to reduce facial wrinkles and skin irregularities, such as blemishes or acne scars.
The technique directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin, precisely removing skin layer by layer. This popular procedure is also called lasabrasion, laser peel, or laser vaporization.
Who Is a Good Candidate For Laser Resurfacing?
If you have fine lines or wrinkles around your eyes or mouth or on your forehead, shallow scars from acne, or non-responsive skin after a facelift, then you may be a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing.
If you have acne or if you have very dark skin, you may not be a candidate. This technique is also not recommended for stretch marks. You should discuss whether laser resurfacing is right for you by consulting with the doctor before having the procedure done.
How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?
The two types of lasers most commonly used in laser resurfacing are carbon dioxide (CO2) and erbium. Each laser vaporizes skin cells damaged at the surface-level.
CO2 Laser Resurfacing
This method has been used for years to treat different skin issues, including wrinkles, scars, warts, enlarged oil glands on the nose, and other conditions.
The newest version of CO2 laser resurfacing (fractionated CO2) uses very short pulsed light energy (known as ultrapulse) or continuous light beams that are delivered in a scanning pattern to remove thin layers of skin with minimal heat damage. Recovery takes up to two weeks.
Application of Fractional CO2 laser
Fractionated CO2 resurfacing is effective for the treatment of facial and non-facial photodamage, such as wrinkles and discoloration. It is also widely used for the treatment of scars from acne, burns, and other trauma.
How many treatments will I need?
Depending on the degree or wrinkling or scarring and your expectations, you would usually need 1-3 treatments. Some people need more, especially those with severe acne scarring.

Is the Laser Treatment uncomfortable?
Typically, “twilight” anesthesia through an IV in the arm is provided by a board-certified anesthetist (particularly when large facial or body areas are undergoing treatment). For smaller areas, a series of anesthetic injections will be delivered by your doctor. Pain medications may also be provided. It will be necessary to plan for at least 3 to 4 hours in the office for the preoperative preparation, laser surgery, and recovery period. Transportation home from the office will need to be pre-arranged as patients are not permitted to drive by themselves.
How does Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing work?
The laser skin resurfacing system has the ability to ablate microscopic zones of tissue deep within the dermis as well as treating microscopic zones of tissue on the skin’s surface, leaving “bridges” of untouched skin to aid in the regeneration process.
What do I look like after the treatment with Frational CO2 laser machine?
Immediately after the treatment you will look red, with tiny white dots, or pinpoint bleeding on your skin. These dots usually disappear the next day. Swelling will last a few days and redness at least 7 days. You can apply makeup usually after 3 days, but you usually need a few days (5-7) days off work.
